When “Smart” Meets Haute Horlogerie
When people think of “smart technology,” they usually picture phones, cars, or wearables. Yet the centuries-old craft of fine watchmaking is also quietly riding the wave of smart technology, in ways less obvious but profoundly transformative.
Today’s haute horlogerie is thriving not just on design and heritage, but on smart innovations in equipment, software, materials, and even how brands engage their audiences. This “smart” transformation merges the artistry of mechanical watchmaking with the logic of modern technology, breathing new life into the craft.
Smart Equipment: A Precision Machinery Revolution
High-end watch ateliers have long been synonymous with handcraftsmanship. But since the 2000s, intelligent machinery has become an indispensable foundation of the industry. Modern CNC multi-axis milling centers sculpt parts with sub-micron tolerances; laser engraving and 3D printing have expanded shapes beyond the limits of handcraft; and high-magnification imaging systems are now critical for quality control of every component. Even a tiny escapement fork or hairspring might require dozens of automated steps to ensure consistent quality.
Far from replacing artisans, these machines free them to concentrate on complex craftsmanship and creative expression. Parts that previously required weeks to complete can now be produced in a matter of days, allowing multiple iterations without compromising precision.
Smart Software: Digital Design, Testing, and Experience
Software is the “invisible architect” behind modern watchmaking. Computer-aided design (CAD) and AI-driven simulations optimize movement architecture before any prototype is built, significantly reducing costly trial-and-error.
Consumers also benefit: augmented reality (AR) try-ons, blockchain-based authenticity certificates, and digital twin experiences enhance trust and engagement.
Mechanisms that were once too complex to realize can now be brought to life through the synergy of advanced software and modern machining centers.
Smart Materials: Cross-Disciplinary Innovation
Richard Mille introduced aerospace-grade carbon fiber composites into watchmaking, achieving a new balance between strength and lightness (e.g., the RM 50-03 in 2017 weighs only ~40 g)[7]. Silicon hairsprings offer anti-magnetic properties and greater stability, significantly improving movement precision and longevity[8].
China’s Lens Technology (founded 1993)[9] and Han’s Laser (founded 1996)[10] both began in the watch industry and have since grown into multi-billion-dollar technology leaders. Not only do they remain key suppliers for watchmaking, but they have also become core suppliers for the global smartphone and smart device sectors.
Sporting Arenas: Timekeeping’s Ultimate Test
Omega has been the official timekeeper of the Olympics since 1932[2]. Seiko has been the timekeeper for World Athletics events since 1985[3]. TAG Heuer revolutionized Formula 1 timing during its tenure as official timekeeper (1992–2003) and will return in 2025[4]. Richard Mille has tested million-dollar tourbillon watches on Rafael Nadal in live matches[5]. Looking back, watches were in fact the earliest pioneers of “smart” technology.
Digital Intelligence and Consumer Connection
AI and big data help brands analyze social media and consumer trends, enabling more personalized offerings. Blockchain and the Internet of Things (IoT) ensure product authenticity and traceability, strengthening consumer trust[6].
Tradition Meets Intelligence: A Dual Renaissance
At the same time, Swiss luxury watch brands have doubled down on their unique strengths — leveraging intelligent manufacturing and creative innovation to enhance value and quality — rather than attempting to compete with Silicon Valley on functionality or volume.
According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH), Swiss watch exports in 2024 totaled CHF 26.0 billion, a decrease of 2.8% from the previous year, with 15.3 million units exported (–9.4%). Watches priced under CHF 3,000 saw a 15.6% decline in export value, while those above CHF 3,000 increased by 1.0%. Steel watch exports fell by 9.8% in value, whereas those of precious metal watches rose by 2.2%. Exports to the United States grew by 5.0%[12][13][14].
These figures highlight a polarized industry: smartwatches dominate in units sold, but haute horlogerie continues to thrive in terms of sales value[11].
In the current wave of structural transformation—driven by intelligent manufacturing, digital technologies, and material innovation—the industry itself requires new forms of organization and shared public platforms to translate technological capability into lasting value.
正是在这样的背景下,China(Shenzhen) Watch Week(深圳[中国]手表周)逐渐形成其现实意义。
It is within this context that China (Shenzhen) Watch Week has taken on its contemporary relevance.
Rather than functioning as a single, standalone exhibition, it operates as a cyclical, industry-wide collaboration platform centered on the broader time-based industry. By bringing together haute horology, smart wearables, intelligent manufacturing, testing and certification, advanced materials, and real-world application scenarios within the same time frame, the platform enables the industry to be understood, discussed, and validated as an integrated whole.
The true value of this platform does not lie in showcasing “new technologies” in isolation. Instead, it creates a continuously evolving space for connection—where traditional watchmaking craftsmanship and intelligent systems can meaningfully interact over time.
Technological developments such as equipment intelligence, software systems, cross-disciplinary materials, and experimental applications in sports timing can only evolve from technical advantages into brand value and industrial value when genuine interaction occurs across the supply chain, and when these ideas are repeatedly examined, debated, and tested within an international context.
From this perspective, China (Shenzhen) Watch Week functions more like an “industry-scale laboratory.”
It does not seek to replace haute watchmaking with smart products; rather, it positions intelligence as a foundational condition—one that supports deeper craftsmanship, higher quality standards, and the long-term reconstruction of value.
The logic aligns naturally with Shenzhen’s long-standing strengths in manufacturing depth, engineering capability, and system-level integration, making the city uniquely suited to host such an evolving industrial platform.
